Principal themes of the 10th IFED
The 2018 IFED Forum will highlight new and present-day challenges in decision making (DM).
Here are some examples of fascinating issues that are becoming increasingly relevant in contemporary DM. However, IFED is an open Forum so we will be pleased to discuss any other issue and application in DM and risk analysis that is brought to the table by presenters and/or participants.
We have data, lots of data - now, what do we do with them?
- information overload, Big Data
- data management strategies in DM
- machine learning, and artificial intelligence
- artificial intelligence algorithms as surrogates for human DM
- data filtering and data evaluation based on performance measures
- data driven modelling versus modelling based on physical understanding
Systems are no longer simple – does this in some way invalidate DM?
- rational DM in the context of messy systems
- increasingly holistic and complex system views
- competing system representations
- hard versus soft systems
- modelling complexity rather than complication in DM
- structuralism in systems modelling
Shortcuts and short horizons versus discipline and rigour - where do we draw the line?
- disinformation, misinformation
- politically-influenced DM, fake news
- sup-optimal short-horizon DM subject to constraints, e.g. elected mandates
- how does the DM process affect, or subvert, public policy
- are DM professionals increasingly eschewing rigour?
And more generally:
Applications in DM and risk analysis, and case studies
- applications in inspection and maintenance planning
- applications in structural health monitoring
- value of information
- system resilience
- quantitative measures of sustainability
- specific applications in civil engineering
- specific probabilistic modelling techniques
